About USG Bilateral Breast
A USG Bilateral Breast is an examination using ultrasound technology that is performed on both breasts and, if necessary, the axillary (underarm) lymph nodes. It uses high-frequency sound waves to get a detailed real-time image of breast tissue and aid in detecting abnormalities like cysts, fibroadenomas, infections, abscesses, and solid breast masses.
For women with dense breast tissue, young women, women who are breastfeeding, and pregnant women, breast ultrasound can also be used to give more information to a physician who has ordered a mammogram for these women as part of further evaluation of breast abnormalities. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy adopts cutting-edge ultrasound systems, providing excellent breast imaging and diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care.
What is a USG Bilateral Breast Scan?
A USG Bilateral Breast scan is a procedure that is performed using high-frequency sound waves to provide detailed images of both breasts without radiation. It helps differentiate fluid-filled cysts from solid masses and can give information on the type, size, shape, and location of breast masses. The exam is painless, nonsurgical, and safe for women of any age.
Purpose of USG Bilateral Breast
1. Evaluation of breast lumps
Assesses palpable breast lumps or nodules
Differentiates cystic lesions from solid masses
Evaluates benign and suspicious breast lesions
2. Investigation of breast pain
Identifies possible causes of persistent or localized breast pain
Detects inflammatory changes, cysts, or abscesses
3. Assessment of nipple abnormalities
Evaluates nipple discharge when clinically indicated
Assesses abnormalities involving the nipple and surrounding tissues
4. Breast cancer evaluation
Assesses suspicious findings detected during clinical examination or mammography
Evaluates lesion size, margins, and vascularity
Examines axillary lymph nodes when required
5. Monitoring known breast lesions
Follows benign breast nodules and cysts over time
Evaluates post-treatment or post-surgical changes
Assesses selected breast implant-related complications
Improves procedural accuracy and sample collection

Benefits of USG Bilateral Breast
Non-invasive and painless
No radiation exposure
Safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Excellent for evaluating dense breast tissue
Differentiates cystic and solid breast lesions
Provides real-time imaging for image-guided procedures

Risks and Limitations
Safety
Ultrasound is extremely safe and does not use ionizing radiation.
It is suitable for women of all ages, including pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Limitations
Breast ultrasound is not a replacement for mammography in routine breast cancer screening.
Tiny calcifications may not be visible on ultrasound.
Additional imaging, such as mammography, breast MRI, or biopsy, may be recommended depending on the findings.
Conclusion
USG Bilateral breast ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and very useful imaging technique for the investigation of breast lumps, cysts, infections, benign tumors, and suspicious breast lesions. It is important to help diagnose breast conditions, and also to monitor known conditions and assist in minimally invasive procedures like FNAC and biopsy. Breast ultrasound is a non-invasive and important method for clinical diagnosis, providing good visualization of the soft tissue, and does not involve any radiation exposure, thus complementing breast clinical examination and mammography to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.
Test information: No preperation needed.

The sonologist will review your medical history, symptoms, and previous breast imaging or pathology reports before starting the examination.
You will be asked to lie comfortably on the examination table with one arm raised above your head to allow complete examination of the breast.
A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied over both breasts and, when clinically indicated, the axillary (underarm) regions.
The sonologist will gently move the ultrasound transducer over the breast tissue to obtain detailed real-time images.
The examination evaluates the breast tissue, cysts, solid masses, fibroadenomas, abscesses, inflammatory changes, and other abnormalities. The axillary lymph nodes may also be assessed when required.
If a suspicious lesion is identified and your treating physician has requested it, the ultrasound may be used to guide procedures such as Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC), core needle biopsy, or cyst aspiration.
The examination is painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The scan usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and findings.
After the examination, the gel will be cleaned off, and you can immediately resume your normal daily activities.
The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is generally available within 1 hour.
