Book a USG Head (Cranial Ultrasound) at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL-accredited diagnostic centre and a NABH Certified Pathology Laboratory. Safe, accurate, and no-radiation cranial ultrasound is used to assess the brain in a safe way, through the open fontanelles (soft spots), in newborns and young infants.
Our highly trained radiologists deliver accurate imaging and timely reports to aid in timely diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up in the diagnosis of different pediatric neurological syndromes in neonates.
About USG Head
The USG, or cranial ultrasound (also called Neurosonography), is a non-invasive imaging test utilizing high-frequency sound to assess the brain of newborns and young infants. An ultrasound probe, which doesn't produce any form of radiation, is positioned on top of the uncovered fontanelles, and on this basis, in detail, the brain is seen.
Cranial ultrasound is not a method of imaging that is generally used in MRI or CT, as it is generally only applicable to infants where the fontanelles have not closed. In older children and adults, the imaging is not routine because of the fact that the bones of the skull do not allow for good visualization of the brain.
In Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, cutting-edge ultrasound equipment is used to offer correct imaging of the brain in newborns for diagnosis and monitoring.
What is a USG Head Scan?
A USG Head Scan creates real-time images of the infant's brain through the natural acoustic windows provided by the fontanelles.
The examination helps evaluate:
Brain ventricles
Brain tissue
Midline brain structures
Intracranial fluid collections
Congenital brain abnormalities
Brain development in newborns and infants
The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and completely free from radiation.
Why is a USG Head Performed?
Your pediatrician or neonatologist may recommend a cranial ultrasound for:
Evaluation of hydrocephalus
Detection of intraventricular hemorrhage (brain bleeding), especially in premature infants
Assessment of congenital brain abnormalities
Evaluation of neonatal seizures
Investigation of suspected brain infections
Assessment of ventricular enlargement
Monitoring of previously diagnosed neurological conditions
Follow-up of high-risk newborns and premature babies
USG Head Services at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy
Our radiology department provides specialized cranial ultrasound services, including:
Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound
Routine evaluation of the brain in newborns and premature infants.
Cranial Ultrasound for Hydrocephalus
Assessment of ventricular size and cerebrospinal fluid accumulation.
Follow-up Cranial Ultrasound
Monitoring of known neurological conditions and treatment response.
High-Risk Infant Neurosonography
Evaluation of infants requiring neurological assessment due to prematurity or other medical conditions.
Who Should Consider a USG Head Scan?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if the patient:
Is a premature baby
Is a newborn requiring neurological evaluation
Has suspected hydrocephalus
Has experienced neonatal seizures
Has suspected intracranial hemorrhage
Requires follow-up of a previously diagnosed brain condition
Needs assessment of brain development

Book Your USG Head Scan
Your paediatrician or neonatologist may have advised you to go for a USG Head or Cranial Ultrasound. Rely on the expertise of Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for diagnostic imaging, interpretation, and timely reporting. Our caring staff is dedicated to the highest level of diagnostic care in a safe and comforting setting and is experienced in all aspects of the examination, regardless of the patient's status: a premature infant, suspected hydrocephalus, neonatal brain hemorrhage, or routine neurological exam.
Test information: No preperation needed.
Reporting: Within 01 hour*
Carry the baby's doctor's prescription and any previous ultrasound, CT, MRI, laboratory reports, or hospital records.
No fasting or special preparation is required unless specifically advised by your doctor.
Feed the baby before the examination, if possible, as a calm or sleeping baby helps obtain clearer images.
Dress the baby in comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the head.
Bring any previous medical records related to premature birth, neonatal intensive care (NICU) admission, or neurological conditions.
Inform the doctor or sonologist if the baby has undergone any recent surgery or has any ongoing medical condition.
Arrive at the imaging center at least 20–30 minutes before the scheduled appointment.
Follow the sonologist's instructions during the examination to help keep the baby comfortable and still.
The radiologist or sonologist will review the infant's medical history, clinical symptoms, and previous imaging or hospital records before starting the examination.
The baby will be placed comfortably on the examination table or in the caregiver's lap, depending on the infant's comfort.
A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied gently over the anterior fontanelle (soft spot) on the baby's head.
The sonologist will carefully move the ultrasound transducer over the fontanelle to obtain real-time images of the brain ventricles, brain tissue, midline structures, and surrounding intracranial spaces.
Multiple images and measurements will be recorded to evaluate brain development, ventricular size, intracranial hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, congenital abnormalities, or other neurological conditions, as clinically indicated.
The examination is completely painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and the baby's cooperation.
After the examination, the gel will be gently cleaned from the baby's head, and no recovery period is required.
The infant can resume normal feeding and activities immediately after the scan.
The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is generally available within 1 hour.
