About USG Chest
The USG Chest (Thoracic Ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging examination that allows the evaluation of the pleura (lining of the lungs), the pleural space, the pleura-chest wall interface, the diaphragm, and peripheral lung abnormalities in immediate proximity to the pleura.
The advantages of ultrasound in the diagnosis of lung disease are the ability to avoid X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scans and to avoid X-ray imaging of the whole lungs, as ultrasound waves do not pass through air. It is very sensitive for pleural fluid, pleural disease, chest wall abnormalities, and some peripheral pulmonary disease. With its state-of-the-art ultrasound technology, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy offers you real-time, accurate imaging for diagnostics, treatment planning, and image-guided procedures.
What is a USG Chest Scan?
A USG Chest Scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the pleura, chest wall, diaphragm, and superficial lung regions. The examination helps evaluate:
Pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs)
Pleural thickening
Peripheral lung consolidation
Pneumonia involving the lung surface
Chest wall swellings or soft tissue lesions
Diaphragmatic movement and abnormalities
Selected thoracic masses adjacent to the chest wall
It is also commonly used to guide procedures such as thoracentesis, pleural aspiration, and drainage.
Why is a USG Chest Performed?
Your doctor may recommend this examination for:
Detection and evaluation of pleural effusion
Assessment of pleural thickening
Evaluation of peripheral lung consolidation or pneumonia
Investigation of chest wall swellings or masses
Assessment of diaphragmatic movement
Guidance for thoracentesis, pleural aspiration, biopsy, or drainage procedures
Follow-up of known pleural or chest wall abnormalities

Who Should Consider a USG Chest Scan?
Your doctor may recommend a USG Chest Scan if you:
Have suspected pleural effusion
Experience unexplained chest pain or shortness of breath
Have suspected pleural infection or empyema
Require evaluation of a chest wall lump or swelling
Need follow-up imaging for pleural disease
Require ultrasound guidance for pleural aspiration or drainage

Inform your doctor or sonologist if you have recently undergone chest surgery, experienced chest trauma, or have any chest drains or medical devices.
Arrive at the imaging center at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
Follow the sonologist's instructions regarding breathing or body positioning during the examination to obtain clear images.

The sonologist will review your medical history, symptoms, and previous imaging reports before starting the examination.
You will be asked to sit or lie comfortably on the examination table, depending on the area being evaluated.
A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied over the chest wall.
The sonologist will gently move the ultrasound transducer over different areas of the chest to examine the pleura, pleural space, chest wall, diaphragm, and peripheral lung regions.
You may be asked to take deep breaths, hold your breath briefly, or change your position during the examination to improve visualization of specific structures.
The scan helps evaluate pleural effusion, pleural thickening, peripheral lung consolidation, chest wall swellings, diaphragmatic movement, and other pleural or superficial thoracic abnormalities.
When clinically indicated, the examination may also be used for real-time guidance during procedures such as thoracentesis, pleural aspiration, drainage, or selected biopsies.
The examination is painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and the area being examined.
After the examination, the gel will be cleaned off, and you can immediately resume your normal daily activities. The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is generally available within 1 hour.
