About USG KUB Scan
A USG KUB (Kidney, Ureter and Bladder) Scan is an ultrasound procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to generate real-time images of the urinary system, which does not involve any use of X-rays or radiation. It provides a way of assessing the kidneys, urinary bladder, and, in the rare instances that they are visible, parts of the ureters to look for abnormalities and disorders of the urinary tract. Unlike X-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation, ultrasound does not produce radiation and therefore is not harmful to children or pregnant women, if clinically appropriate.
What is a USG KUB Scan?
A USG KUB Scan is a specialized ultrasound examination that assesses the urinary system, including the:
Kidneys
Urinary bladder
Visible portions of the ureters
The scan helps evaluate:
Kidney size, shape, and position
Kidney stones and urinary tract obstruction
Renal cysts and other structural abnormalities
Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys due to urine buildup)
Bladder wall abnormalities
Residual urine after urination (when requested)
Prostate size in male patients, if specifically included in the examination
The scan is painless, non-invasive, and does not involve radiation exposure.
Why is a USG KUB Scan Performed?
Your doctor may recommend a USG KUB Scan to investigate symptoms affecting the urinary tract or to monitor known kidney and bladder conditions.
Common indications include:
Kidney Stones
Detecting kidney stones
Assessing urinary tract obstruction caused by stones
Monitoring known kidney stones
Urinary Tract Disorders
Evaluation of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Assessment of urinary retention
Investigation of painful or frequent urination
Evaluation of blood in the urine (hematuria)
Kidney Disorders
Detecting hydronephrosis
Assessing renal cysts
Evaluating congenital kidney abnormalities
Monitoring certain chronic kidney conditions
Bladder Conditions
Assessing bladder wall thickening
Detecting bladder stones
Measuring post-void residual urine when indicated
Prostate Evaluation (Male Patients)
Assessment of prostate enlargement when requested by the referring doctor
Evaluation of urinary obstruction related to the prostate

The sonologist will review your medical history, symptoms, and previous imaging or laboratory reports before starting the examination.
You will be asked to lie comfortably on the examination table with a comfortably full bladder, unless otherwise instructed.
A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied over the abdomen and lower abdominal (pelvic) region.
The sonologist will gently move the ultrasound transducer over the abdomen to examine the kidneys, urinary bladder, and visible portions of the ureters.
The examination evaluates the size, shape, position, and structure of the kidneys, as well as the presence of kidney stones, hydronephrosis, cysts, masses, bladder wall abnormalities, or other urinary tract conditions.
If requested by your doctor, you may be asked to empty your bladder, after which a second scan will be performed to measure the post-void residual (PVR) urine. In male patients, the prostate gland may also be assessed when specifically included in the examination.
The examination is painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and whether post-void measurements are required.
After the examination, the gel will be cleaned off, and you may immediately resume your normal daily activities.
The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is generally available within 1 hour.
