Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy offers additional 3D/4D/5D USG at our NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre. We offer specialized Radiology and diagnostic imaging services, including additional 3D/4D/5D USG. This specialized ultrasound scan service provides enhanced three-dimensional and real-time imaging during pregnancy, when clinically indicated. During one examination, depending on the situation and the equipment available, 3D, 4D, or 5D ultrasound can assist in visualizing the baby’s facial features, surface anatomy, and movements as an add-on to the normal pregnancy scan.
About USG Additional 3D/4D/5D USG
USG Additional 3D/4D/5D is an advanced ultrasound imaging service that can be performed as an add-on procedure to a pregnancy scan. It utilizes sound waves to generate images of the baby while in the womb. 3D and 4D ultrasound scans generate distinct types of images based on the available technology. Three-dimensional ultrasound generates a surface or volume image, while in the case of four-dimensional ultrasound, the image is dynamic and includes the effect of time. The term 5D is applied by some ultrasound centers and equipment manufacturers to describe advanced or enhanced image rendering or processing capabilities. Thus, the features available may vary depending on the specific ultrasound equipment used.
What is USG Additional 3D/4D/5D USG?
USG stands for ultrasonography, which is a diagnostic imaging technique that employs high-frequency sound waves to generate images of the inside of your body without utilizing ionizing radiation.
3D Ultrasound: Produces three-dimensional images of selected fetal structures, often including the face and surface anatomy.
4D Ultrasound: Provides moving, real-time 3D images, allowing visualization of fetal movements and facial expressions when conditions permit.
5D Ultrasound: Generally refers to enhanced image processing or rendering available on certain ultrasound systems. The specific features vary by equipment and provider.
The quality of the resulting images depends on the baby’s position, gestational age, amniotic fluid volume, maternal body type, and the specific area being examined.
Common Reasons for USG Additional 3D/4D/5D USG
View of enhanced fetal visualization: An additional view of selected fetal structures during pregnancy.
Visualization of facial features: Additional view of the baby’s face, nose, lips, and other surface anatomy features when the position allows.
View of fetal movements in real-time: 4D imaging can also show you the baby moving in real-time, for example, when the baby opens its mouth or moves its hands.
View of additional anatomical structures: An additional view of selected anatomical structures when indicated.
Pregnancy imaging experience: An opportunity for parents to view rendered images of the baby.
Complementary obstetric assessment: An additional view of the fetus when the examiner determines it would be beneficial.
View of selected fetal abnormalities: Additional view of selected abnormalities, if suspected.
Request for additional imaging: May be requested as an add-on to an eligible pregnancy ultrasound examination, if available and clinically indicated.
Conditions and Structures Evaluated
Fetal Facial Features
3D and 4D ultrasound may provide an additional view of the baby’s surface anatomy, including the nose, lips, cheeks, and chin, depending on the position.
Fetal Movements
A 4D ultrasound can show you a real-time view of the baby’s movements during the scan. These images are observational and do not confirm the baby is normal and healthy.
Surface Anatomy
The 3D rendering can provide an additional view of selected fetal surface anatomy features. Any suspected abnormality must be evaluated with appropriate imaging and specialist assessment.
Selected Structural Abnormalities
In some instances, 3D ultrasound can be helpful in obtaining additional views of specific abnormalities that cannot be viewed well on a standard 2D ultrasound. The ability to do so will depend on the type of abnormality.
Fetal Position and Imaging Conditions
There are occasions when the baby’s position will prevent us from being able to view certain fetal anatomy during the examination. In cases where the baby turns away from the ultrasound probe, the desired views may not be available during this session.
Complementary Pregnancy Imaging
3D/4D/5D imaging can be a valuable add-on to routine pregnancy scans, but standard pregnancy scans remain essential for evaluating fetal growth, placental position, amniotic fluid levels, and other parameters.

Book Your USG Additional 3D/4D/5D USG
If you wish to undergo additional 3D/4D/5D USG, contact Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for information about appointment availability and suitability during pregnancy. Bring your pregnancy records and previous ultrasound reports (if available) to ensure we have your records on file. Our ability to capture clear 3D/4D/5D images depends on your gestational age, the position of your baby, and other imaging conditions.
Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting is required before the examination.
Bring your doctor’s prescription, pregnancy records, and previous ultrasound reports, if available.
Inform the sonographer about your current stage of pregnancy and any relevant medical concerns.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen.
Follow the sonographer’s instructions regarding your position during the examination.
The clarity of the images depends on the baby’s position, gestational age, amniotic fluid volume, and other imaging conditions.
The baby’s position may limit the views obtained. Additional imaging or a repeat attempt may be suggested if clinically appropriate.
3D/4D/5D ultrasound is an additional imaging option and does not replace routine pregnancy scans or medically indicated fetal assessment.
The sonographer reviews the prescription, pregnancy records, and previous ultrasound reports, if available.
The patient lies comfortably on the examination couch, with the abdomen accessible for scanning.
Ultrasound gel is applied to the abdominal skin to help transmit sound waves.
A transducer is moved gently over the abdomen to obtain ultrasound images of the baby.
Depending on the equipment and clinical indication, 3D images may provide three-dimensional views, 4D imaging may show fetal movements in real time, and 5D may provide enhanced image rendering on supported systems.
The sonographer attempts to capture suitable views of the baby’s facial features and selected surface anatomy when the baby’s position and imaging conditions permit.
The examination may be limited by fetal position or other technical factors. The images obtained do not, by themselves, confirm that the baby is completely healthy.
The images are reviewed and documented, and the findings are reported as appropriate for the examination.
