Book an advanced USG Level 2 (Triple) scan, accredited by NABL & NABH, a type of Radiology & diagnostic imaging service in Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. During your pregnancy, a level 2 scan (Fetal anomaly scan) is performed to examine the baby's anatomy, growth, and development. Sometimes ‘Triple’ refers to a particular scanner package which may be centre-specific and may need to be confirmed with the diagnostic centre. The scan is performed to evaluate fetal structures and to identify some ultrasound abnormalities that can be detected at birth.
About USG Level 2 (Triple)
USG Level 2 (Triple) refers to an in-depth obstetric ultrasound examination which is usually conducted at the 2nd trimester of pregnancy. The scan is a detailed investigation of the main structural components of the baby (fetus), the placenta, amniotic fluid, and other components in accordance with the scan examination protocol. An element of obstetric foetal assessment and part of the antenatal checkup, to facilitate diagnosis of potential problems requiring further investigation by the obstetrician.
What is USG Level 2 (Triple)?
Visible anatomical structures, such as the fetal brain, face, spine, heart, abdomen, kidneys, and limbs, are checked. Additionally, the scan may be used to assess the position of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid, and the length of the cervix if it is determined that this is needed. While it can identify a large number of structural abnormalities, it's important to note that not all congenital abnormalities can be picked up with ultrasound.
Common Reasons for USG Level 2 (Triple)
Fetal Anatomy Assessment: Overview of major fetal organs and anatomy.
Some structural abnormalities can be noted that you will be able to observe on an ultrasound exam, which is known as Congenital Abnormality Screening.
Fetal Growth Assessment: Reports fetal assessments by the gestation period.
Brain and Spine Evaluation: Exploring the structures that are visible in the fetal brain and spine.
Simple basic anatomy (Heart Assessment) of the fetal heart within the limits of the scan.
Placental Assessment: Looks for and determines how the placenta is covering and how it looks.
Amniotic Fluid Assessment: Checks the amount of amniotic fluid.
Follow-Up Evaluation: May be ordered when a finding may indicate the need for more evaluation in a previous scan.
Conditions Evaluated
Fetal Brain and Spine
The scan measures structures that can be seen in the baby's brain and spine to detect some abnormalities in the way they develop, such as some types of neural tube defect.
Fetal Heart
The evaluation of the general size and appearance of the fetal heart in the exam. A cardiac specialist may suggest a fetal echocardiogram if an abnormality is suspected or if it is not possible to completely visualize the heart.
Facial Structures
Facial Assessment: Selected facial structures, including the upper lip, are examined for visible structural abnormalities.
Abdominal Organs
The scan can examine the stomach, kidneys, abdominal wall wall and urinary bladder, to assess their development, and pick up some abnormalities.
Placenta and Amniotic Fluid
A scan may help to identify the volume and location of the amniotic fluid. These results can be a helpful guide for antenatal (before childbirth) care and may be the case for more monitoring to be performed.
Fetal Growth and Development
Chosen measurements for the fetus are used to compare its growth with the length of gestation. The results are interpreted in the light of the clinical findings, such as pregnancy history.
Why Choose Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy?
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy is an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre, offering Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Pathology services. The centre is dedicated to using the correct protocols to ensure good ultrasound images, patient comfort, and reporting useful information. The imaging team has developed an examination procedure which is used for antenatal examination, and it aids in additional treatment and decisions by the doctors.
Book Your USG Level 2 (Triple) Scan
If recommended, book your USG level 2 (Triple) scan with Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. Take your prescription and previous ultrasound reports and notes relating to the pregnancy. The imaging team will tell you the term of your pregnancy and, if you have any concerns, prepare for the scan as the imaging team instructs you.
Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Fasting is generally not required for a Level 2 obstetric ultrasound.
Follow the diagnostic centre's instructions regarding bladder preparation.
Bring your doctor's prescription and previous ultrasound reports.
Inform the staff about your gestational age and relevant pregnancy history.
Share any concerns or findings from previous antenatal examinations with the healthcare professional.
The procedure will be explained to you before the examination.
You may need to change your position during the scan to help obtain clear images.
Additional imaging or a follow-up scan may be recommended if some fetal structures cannot be adequately visualised.
The sonographer will review your prescription, gestational age, and relevant pregnancy history.
You will be asked to lie on the examination bed, usually on your back or in a position that allows clear imaging.
A suitable amount of ultrasound gel will be applied to your abdomen.
The sonographer will move the ultrasound probe over your abdomen to obtain images of the developing fetus.
Measurements and images of the fetal brain, spine, heart, abdomen, limbs, and other visible anatomical structures will be obtained according to the examination protocol.
The placenta, amniotic fluid, and other relevant pregnancy features will also be assessed.
You may be asked to change position to improve the visibility of particular structures.
The examination generally takes around 30–60 minutes, although the duration may vary depending on fetal position and image quality.
A radiologist will review the images and prepare the report. Additional assessment may be advised if any findings require further evaluation.
