One of the most prevalent cancers in
women is breast cancer. Treatment is targeted to each patient's specific case,

PET-CT is an examination which
considers two imaging techniques: positron emission tomography (PET) and
computed tomography (CT). PET gives information about metabolic activity within

What Are the Test

Before the scan, patients usually receive specific preparation
instructions. For many FDG PET-CT examinations, patients are asked not to eat
for several hours before the scan and to drink water instead. People with
diabetes may receive special instructions because blood sugar and insulin
levels can affect the distribution of the tracer. A small amount of radioactive
tracer is injected into a vein. The patient then rests quietly while the tracer
travels through the body and is taken up by tissues. This waiting period is
commonly around 30 to 60 minutes.
After this, the patient lies on the scanning table. The CT portion is
performed first, followed by the PET images. The scanning itself usually takes
around 30 minutes, although the total time at the centre can be longer because
of preparation and tracer uptake.
Is PET-CT Safe?
PET-CT uses a small amount of radioactive material for imaging. The
tracer loses radioactivity over time and is also eliminated from the body,
mainly through urine. Patients are generally advised to drink plenty of water
after the examination unless their doctor has advised otherwise. Because PET-CT
involves radiation, it should be performed when the expected medical benefit
justifies the exposure. Patients should tell their doctor if they are pregnant
or may be pregnant. Women who are breastfeeding should also discuss this with
their doctor or nuclear medicine team before the examination.
What Happens After a
PET-CT Scan?
After the scan, a specialist in nuclear medicine or radiology reviews
the images and prepares a report for the referring doctor. The report may
describe areas of increased or decreased tracer uptake and other findings seen
on the CT images. An abnormal PET-CT finding does not always mean cancer.
Depending on the finding, the doctor may recommend another imaging test,
follow-up imaging, laboratory testing, or a biopsy. Comparing the PET-CT with
previous scans can also be important when evaluating changes over time.
When Should a Doctor
Recommend PET-CT?
The decision to perform PET-CT should be based on the individual
patient's medical situation. It may be considered when there is a concern about
advanced disease, spread to other parts of the body, treatment response, or
recurrence. For early-stage breast cancer, other breast imaging tests such as
mammography, ultrasound and MRI may be more appropriate for evaluating the
breast itself. PET-CT is therefore not a replacement for routine breast imaging
or biopsy when those tests are indicated.
