About Colour Doppler Pelvis Scan
A Colour Doppler Pelvis Scan is a non-invasive ultrasound exam that uses Doppler technology as well as traditional ultrasound to assess the pelvic organs and blood flow in vessels that lead into and out of them. Colour Doppler imaging is not the same as a routine ultrasound of the pelvis, as it permits the doctor to determine the vascularity, detect abnormal flow patterns, and examine the structures of the uterus, ovary, prostate, or the neighbouring vascular supply to the pelvis. The examination is non-painful and harmless as it does not involve X-rays or other radiation.
What is a Colour Doppler Pelvis Scan?
A Colour Doppler Pelvis Scan allows for better images of the pelvic organs, and at the same time, blood flow is displayed in colour. This enables doctors to evaluate both the anatomy and the circulation of blood within the pelvis. The examination can be done as:
Pelvic Doppler transvaginal ultrasound (TAPSD) is an ultrasound procedure done in the lower abdomen with a full bladder.
Transvaginal Colour Doppler Ultrasound (TVS) provides a detailed examination of the female pelvic organs.
When requested, Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) and Doppler should be carried out to assess the prostate in males.
Your doctor advises you on which is the best method for you based on your symptoms.
Why is a Colour Doppler Pelvis Scan Performed?

The sonologist will review your medical history, symptoms, and previous imaging reports before starting the examination.
Depending on the clinical indication, the scan may be performed using a transabdominal, transvaginal (TVS), or transrectal (TRUS) approach.
For a transabdominal scan, ultrasound gel will be applied to the lower abdomen, and the transducer will be moved gently over the skin to obtain images.
For a transvaginal scan, a sterile-covered ultrasound probe with lubricating gel will be gently inserted into the vagina to obtain detailed images of the pelvic organs.
Colour Doppler technology will be used to evaluate blood flow in the uterus, ovaries, pelvic vessels, prostate (when indicated), and surrounding structures.
The sonologist will assess blood flow patterns, vascularity, and any abnormalities while capturing multiple images and measurements.
The examination is painless and generally causes only mild pressure or slight discomfort during a transvaginal examination.
The scan usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on the area being evaluated and the complexity of the examination.
Once the scan is complete, you can return to your normal daily activities immediately.
The images will be reviewed by a radiologist, and the report is generally available within 1 hour.
