Our team of professional radiologists collaborates closely with ophthalmologists to offer accurate imaging to aid in the management, diagnosis, and surveillance of eye and orbital diseases.
About USG Eye / Orbit
USG Eye / Orbit (Ocular Ultrasound or Orbital Ultrasound) is a non-invasive imaging test that is performed to assess the eyeball, optic nerve, vitreous, retina, and surrounding orbital tissues using high-frequency sound waves.
This scan is particularly beneficial if it is not possible to examine the back of the eye adequately (for example, if the Eye is too cloudy due to dense cataract, vitreous haemorrhage, or a traumatically injured eye). It is also useful for determining the masses of orbits and other abnormalities of surrounding eye tissue. Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy utilizes cutting-edge ultrasound technology for precise, on-the-spot visualization for comprehensive eye evaluation.
What is a USG Eye / Orbit Scan?
A USG Eye / Orbit Scan provides detailed images of:
Eyeball (globe)
Retina
Vitreous chamber
Lens
Optic nerve
Extraocular muscles
Orbital soft tissues
The examination helps diagnose a variety of ocular and orbital disorders safely and accurately without exposing patients to radiation.
Note: Ultrasound is not used to diagnose cataracts or glaucoma. These conditions are primarily diagnosed through a comprehensive ophthalmic examination. However, ocular ultrasound may be performed when the posterior segment cannot be visualized because of a dense cataract or to evaluate complications associated with eye diseases.
Why is a USG Eye / Orbit Performed?
Your doctor may recommend this examination for:
Sudden vision loss
Ocular trauma or eye injury
Vitreous hemorrhage
Retinal detachment
Vitreous detachment
Intraocular tumors
Orbital masses or cysts
Foreign bodies in or around the eye
Evaluation before or after eye surgery
Assessment when direct examination of the retina is not possible
USG Eye / Orbit Services at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy
Our radiology department offers comprehensive ocular ultrasound services, including:
Ocular Ultrasound
Evaluation of the retina, vitreous, lens, and optic nerve.
Orbital Ultrasound
Assessment of orbital masses, cysts, inflammation, and soft tissue abnormalities.
Retinal Evaluation
Detection of retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and other posterior segment abnormalities.
Ocular Trauma Assessment
Evaluation of eye injuries, foreign bodies, hemorrhage, and globe integrity.
Who Should Consider a USG Eye / Orbit Scan?
Your doctor may recommend this examination if you:
Experience sudden vision loss
Have suffered an eye injury
Have suspected retinal detachment
Have a vitreous hemorrhage
Need evaluation of an orbital swelling or mass
Require imaging before or after ocular surgery
Have a dense cataract that prevents examination of the retina

Carry your doctor's prescription and any previous eye examination reports, ultrasound reports, CT/MRI scans, or ophthalmology records.
No fasting or special preparation is required for this examination.
Continue taking your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to remove them before the examination.
Inform your doctor or sonologist if you have recently undergone eye surgery, sustained an eye injury, or have any eye infection.
Avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the affected eye before the scan.
Arrive at the imaging center at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
Follow the instructions provided by the sonologist during the examination to ensure accurate imaging.
The sonologist will review your medical history, symptoms, and previous ophthalmic or imaging reports before starting the examination.
You will be asked to lie comfortably on the examination table or sit in a suitable position, depending on the scanning technique.
A sterile, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied over the closed eyelid. The examination is performed with the eyelid gently closed.
The sonologist will carefully place the ultrasound transducer on the closed eyelid and obtain images of the eyeball (globe), retina, vitreous chamber, lens, optic nerve, extraocular muscles, and surrounding orbital soft tissues.
You may be asked to look in different directions while keeping your eyelid closed to allow better visualization of various eye structures.
The examination helps evaluate conditions such as retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, orbital masses, foreign bodies, and ocular trauma when clinically indicated.
The scan is painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The examination usually takes 10–20 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and findings.
After the scan, the gel will be gently cleaned from the eyelid, and you can immediately resume your normal daily activities.
