About USG Obstetrical / Fetal Well-Being
USG Obstetrical / Fetal Well-Being is an advanced ultrasound that is used in pregnancy to assess the fetus' condition and growth, movement, and breathing activities. It also helps to determine that the baby is developing normally.

What is a USG Obstetrical / Fetal Well-Being Scan?
A USG Obstetrical / Fetal Well-Being scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that helps evaluate the health of the baby in pregnancy. This procedure includes a biophysical profile (BPP) that assesses the movement and breathing of fetal, the tone of the muscles, and fetal heart activity. This scan also confirms the position of the fetus, location, and overall growth.
Common Reasons for USG Obstetrical / Fetal Well-Being
Routine pregnancy monitoring
Assessment of fetal growth
Evaluation of reduced fetal movements
Monitoring high-risk pregnancies
Assessment of amniotic fluid volume
Placental evaluation
Pregnancy-induced hypertension
Gestational diabetes
Post-term pregnancy monitoring
Follow-up of abnormal obstetric findings
Conditions Evaluated
Fetal Growth Assessment
Measures fetal size and growth parameters to ensure the baby is developing appropriately for the gestational age.
Fetal Well-Being
Evaluates fetal movements, breathing movements, muscle tone, and heart activity to assess the baby's overall health.
Amniotic Fluid Assessment
Measures amniotic fluid levels to detect conditions such as oligohydramnios (low fluid) or polyhydramnios (excess fluid).
Placental Evaluation
Assesses the location, maturity, and appearance of the placenta and identifies conditions such as placenta previa when present.
High-Risk Pregnancy Monitoring
Provides ongoing assessment in pregnancies complicated by hypertension, diabetes, fetal growth restriction, or previous pregnancy complications.

The patient is asked to lie comfortably on the ultrasound examination table.
A water-based ultrasound gel is applied over the abdomen.
The radiologist gently moves an ultrasound transducer over the abdomen to obtain images of the fetus and uterus.
The examination evaluates fetal growth, fetal movements, breathing movements, muscle tone, fetal heartbeat, placental position, and amniotic fluid volume.
A Biophysical Profile (BPP) may be performed when clinically indicated to assess overall fetal well-being.
Additional measurements or imaging may be performed if required based on the clinical condition.
The procedure is safe, painless, non-invasive, and does not involve radiation.
The examination usually takes approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the stage of pregnancy and the clinical indication.
