About USG Prostate

USG Prostate is an ultrasound exam that does not involve touching or inserting any objects into the body to measure the size, shape, structure, and condition of the prostate gland. Evaluation of the urinary bladder and measurement of post-void residual urine are also performed when clinically indicated to help assess the bladder.

Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy offers high-end ultrasound diagnostics with state-of-the-art technology, which helps in diagnosis and in making proper decisions for treating prostate-related ailments and urinary troubles.

What is a USG Prostate Scan?

A USG Prostate Scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the prostate gland and surrounding structures without exposing the patient to radiation. Depending on the clinical indication, the examination may be performed as:

  • Transabdominal Ultrasound (TAUS): Performed through the lower abdomen with a full bladder. This is the most commonly performed prostate ultrasound.
  • Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS): Provides detailed imaging of the prostate and may be recommended when detailed assessment or biopsy guidance is required.

The scan helps evaluate:

  • Prostate size and volume
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Prostate inflammation (prostatitis)
  • Prostate cysts
  • Prostate calcifications
  • Bladder wall abnormalities
  • Post-void residual urine (PVR)

Note: Ultrasound alone cannot diagnose prostate cancer. If cancer is suspected, additional tests such as a PSA blood test, MRI, or prostate biopsy may be recommended by your doctor.

Why is a USG Prostate Performed?

Your doctor may recommend this scan if you have:

  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak urine stream
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Blood in the urine
  • Suspected enlarged prostate (BPH)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic pain
  • Follow-up after prostate treatment or surgery
