About USG Thyroid
USG Thyroid, or a Thyroid Ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to look at the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck. It gives detailed pictures, without the use of radiation, of the size, shape, and any abnormalities of the gland.
High-resolution thyroid ultrasound with accurate reporting is provided at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy for diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up. Our advanced ultrasound equipment provides clear and reliable diagnostic images, whether you're suffering from neck swelling, have atypical thyroid function tests, or need to be evaluated for thyroid nodules. Our advanced ultrasound devices are available at our centre to assess you.
What is a USG Thyroid Scan?
A USG Thyroid Scan is a painless, radiation-free examination that produces real-time images of the thyroid gland and nearby soft tissues. The scan helps evaluate:
Thyroid size and shape
Thyroid nodules
Thyroid cysts
Goiter (thyroid enlargement)
Thyroid inflammation (thyroiditis)
Calcifications within thyroid nodules
Enlarged cervical lymph nodes
Blood flow within the thyroid gland (when Doppler imaging is performed)
A thyroid ultrasound is often recommended to further evaluate abnormalities detected during a physical examination or thyroid blood tests.
Common Reasons for a USG Thyroid Scan
Your doctor may recommend this scan to:
Evaluate thyroid nodules
Assess thyroid enlargement (goiter)
Examine thyroid cysts
Investigate neck swelling
Monitor thyroid disorders
Evaluate abnormal thyroid function test results
Detect enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
Guide Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) biopsy
Monitor thyroid nodules after treatment
Conditions Detected by USG Thyroid
A Thyroid Ultrasound can help diagnose:
Thyroid nodules
Thyroid cysts
Multinodular goiter
Diffuse goiter
Thyroiditis (Hashimoto's or other inflammatory conditions)
Benign thyroid lesions
Suspicious thyroid masses
Enlarged cervical lymph nodes
Thyroid abscess (rare)

The sonologist will gently move the ultrasound transducer over the thyroid gland to examine both thyroid lobes, the isthmus, and surrounding soft tissues.
The scan will assess the size, shape, texture, nodules, cysts, calcifications, and any other abnormalities of the thyroid gland.
If clinically indicated, Colour Doppler imaging may be performed to evaluate blood flow within the thyroid gland and surrounding tissues.
The sonologist may also examine the cervical lymph nodes if required.
The examination is completely painless, non-invasive, and uses no ionizing radiation.
The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and the findings.
