A USG Follicular Study, also known as Follicular Monitoring, is a type of scan related to ultrasounds and is performed during the menstrual cycle of women so that it assesses the maturation of ovarian follicles. The scan also assesses the appearance and thickness of the endometrium, which is the uterine lining. It is important for successful pregnancy.

What is a USG Follicular Study?

The first scan is usually performed between Day 8 and Day 10 of the menstrual cycle, followed by additional scans as advised by your doctor.
For a transabdominal scan, a full bladder is usually required. Drink 3–4 glasses of water about 1 hour before the scan and avoid urinating until the examination is completed.
For a transvaginal scan (TVS), no bladder preparation is required, and the bladder should be empty before the examination.
Wear loose and comfortable clothing for easy access during the scan.
Carry previous ultrasound reports, fertility treatment records, hormone test results, or other relevant medical documents if available.
Inform the radiologist about the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and any fertility medications you are taking.
Continue your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Arrive at the centre 15–20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

For a transabdominal scan, the ultrasound probe is moved over the lower abdomen after applying a water-based gel.
For a transvaginal scan (TVS), a specially designed ultrasound probe covered with a sterile sheath is gently inserted into the vagina to obtain detailed images of the ovaries and uterus.
The radiologist measures the size and growth of ovarian follicles and identifies the dominant follicle.
The thickness and appearance of the endometrium (uterine lining) are also assessed.
The scan may be repeated on different days of the menstrual cycle to monitor follicular growth and detect ovulation.
The procedure is safe, painless, radiation-free, and usually takes about 10–20 minutes per visit.
