Schedule your Colour Doppler Thigh Ultrasound at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre offering advanced Radiology and diagnostic imaging services. Colour Doppler Thigh is a non-invasive ultrasound examination used to assess blood flow through the blood vessels of the thigh and evaluate selected soft tissue abnormalities. It may help doctors investigate thigh pain, swelling, suspected blood clots, vascular narrowing, and other circulation-related problems. The examination can assess arterial or venous blood flow, depending on the clinical indication, and provide useful information for further diagnosis and treatment planning.
Large blood vessels supplying blood to the lower limb are present inside the thigh. The Colour Doppler Thigh evaluates the blood flow in certain arteries and veins in this area through the application of ultrasound technology. It is ultrasound imaging combined with Doppler imaging to give information on the direction of blood flow, blood flow velocity, and blood flow pattern. It is recommended for patients with unexplained swelling, pain, and tenderness of the thigh and any possible vascular problems. The study might be directed at either the arterial or venous (or both) circulation, depending on the doctor's wishes. It can also be useful for the study of some selected soft tissue abnormalities and the circulation through them.
Colour Doppler Thigh is an ultrasound diagnostic test that utilises high-frequency sound waves to measure blood flow in certain blood vessels in the thigh. The Doppler component shows blood flow and can aid with the identification of some abnormalities, including decreased blood flow, obstruction of blood vessels, and other indications of blood clots. During a venous Doppler exam, veins are examined for compressibility, blood flow, and signs of blood clots. During an arterial Doppler examination, the arteries are examined to see their blood flow patterns and any narrowing or blockage. Broadly speaking, the specific vessels are those which are usually identified by symptoms, and then those whose clinical indication will lead to them being used.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is when a blood clot develops in one of the deeper veins. Venous Doppler examination may be useful in identifying veins assessed and evaluating the venous blood flow for detection of thrombosis. The extent of the examination is dependent upon the referral and clinical findings. It is important to check for DVT early in the case of suspicion.
Peripheral arterial disease may cause a narrowing or blockage of the arteries, which may lead to decreased blood flow to the legs. Arterial Doppler is able to assess patterns of blood flow and may detect problems that could indicate trouble with blood flow in the affected vessels.
Venous insufficiency is a situation in which the veins are not efficient in returning blood towards the heart. In some protocols, Doppler ultrasound can be used to evaluate venous outflow and reflux in specific veins to aid in the evaluation of the following symptoms: swelling, heaviness, or visible varicose veins.
Colour Doppler can be useful to see alterations in blood flow with narrowing or blockage of the arteries or veins. Depending on the findings and on the patient's symptoms, additional vascular imaging or investigations may be necessary.
In some types of injury, Doppler ultrasound can assist in assessing blood flow in accessible vessels and also be used to explore any possible vascular complications. Please note that certain types and severity of injuries may not be suitable for the use of ultrasound.
If there is a lump/swelling in the thigh, ultrasound examination may be useful to determine the position and purpose of the lump or swelling. Doppler imaging might offer extra details of blood flow in or around the lesion. Additional imaging may be warranted depending upon imaging results.
Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy provides diagnostic imaging services focusing on patient care, appropriate diagnosis protocols, and reliable diagnosis reporting. We strive to give you a relaxing examination experience and images that can be matched with your pain, physical exam, and medical history. Since it is a Doppler examination, the one chosen depends upon the clinical indication to help determine the relevant blood-flow pattern and blood-flow vessels. Assessment of previous Doppler reports, vascular imaging studies, and other relevant medical records (if available) should be brought along by the patient to assist in comparison and assessment.
For those who have been advised to have a Colour Doppler Thigh appointment, please schedule your exam at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. The study may be recommended to look into thigh pain and/or swelling, possible blockage of the blood vessels, or issues with the circulation in the thigh. Bring your prescription with you and any other imaging reports (if applicable). If the thigh or leg swells up suddenly with pain, then get urgent medical attention. If the pain comes on suddenly and severely, or the limb is cold or pale, or the leg is swollen, with chest pain or difficulty breathing, then there is a need for urgent medical attention.
