Visit Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy, an NABL & NABH-accredited diagnostic centre providing advanced Radiology and diagnostic imaging services. A facial ultrasound scan is an assessment of the soft tissues and superficial structures in the face that can be performed to help the doctor form a detailed image of swellings, lumps, cysts, inflammation, and other localised abnormalities.
About USG Face
USG Face is an ultrasound that is used to assess the soft tissue structures of the face. It uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain detailed and clear images without the use of ionising radiation. This scan can be useful for evaluation of swelling, palpable lumps, cystic lesions, inflammatory changes, or other superficial abnormalities. According to the clinical requirement, ultrasound may also be used to evaluate blood flow within a lesion or surrounding structures.
What is USG Face?
Ultrasound gel is placed on the skin during the test, and the small handheld device is scanned over the site of interest. These ultrasound waves generate real-time images of the soft tissues. This examination can be used to differentiate between fluid-filled and solid lesions and make an evaluation of the size, location, margin, and contents of a superficial lesion.
Common Reasons for USG Face
Facial swelling or localized lump
Evaluation of a palpable mass
Suspected cyst or fluid collection
Swelling following injury
Suspected inflammatory changes
Evaluation of superficial soft-tissue abnormalities
Assessment of a known facial lesion
Follow-up of previously identified abnormalities
Evaluation of localized pain or tenderness
Assessment of superficial lesions when clinically indicated
Conditions Evaluated
Facial Soft-Tissue Lesions
Ultrasound can evaluate superficial soft-tissue abnormalities and provide information about their size, location, and internal characteristics.
Cysts and Fluid Collections
The examination can help identify fluid-filled lesions, cysts, and localized collections within the superficial tissues of the face.
Lipomas and Other Superficial Masses
USG can help assess superficial masses such as lipomas and other soft-tissue lesions, including their extent and relationship with nearby structures.
Inflammatory Changes
Ultrasound may help identify swelling, increased tissue changes, and fluid collections associated with localized inflammation or infection.
Post-Traumatic Swelling
Following an injury, ultrasound can be used to assess localized swelling, superficial collections, and other soft-tissue changes.
Enlarged or Abnormal Superficial Structures
When clinically required, ultrasound can help evaluate superficial structures and localized abnormalities in the facial region.
Benefits of USG Face
Non-invasive and generally well tolerated
No ionizing radiation
Real-time imaging of superficial tissues
Useful for evaluating facial lumps and swellings
Helps differentiate solid and cystic lesions
Can assess the size and location of superficial abnormalities
Suitable for follow-up examinations when required
Provides imaging information that can support further diagnosis and treatment planning

Book Your USG Face
If a doctor has recommended an ultrasound examination of the face, schedule your scan at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. Bring prescription, previous ultrasound reports, imaging studies, and other relevant medical records when available. Inform the ultrasound team about the location of any swelling, lump, pain, or other area of concern before the examination.
Test information: Fasting NOT needed
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Usually, no fasting or special preparation is required for a facial ultrasound.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area of the face being examined.
Inform the ultrasound team about the exact location of any swelling, lump, pain, tenderness, or other area of concern.
Inform the healthcare professional about any previous facial surgery, injury, infection, or known abnormality in the area being examined.
Bring your doctor’s prescription and previous ultrasound, CT, MRI, or other relevant reports if available.
If the area has already been evaluated or treated, provide details of any previous procedure or treatment.
Keep the skin over the area clean and free from heavy creams, makeup, or other products when possible.
Follow any additional instructions provided by your doctor or the ultrasound team.
Remain relaxed and keep the area being examined still during image acquisition.
The patient’s symptoms, medical history, previous procedures, and clinical indication are reviewed before the examination.
The patient is positioned comfortably so that the area of concern can be examined properly.
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin over the area being assessed.
A handheld ultrasound transducer is gently moved over the facial region to obtain real-time images.
High-frequency sound waves are used to evaluate the superficial soft tissues and other structures within the area of interest.
The examination can provide information about the size, location, margins, shape, and internal characteristics of a superficial lesion.
Ultrasound may help differentiate fluid-filled or cystic lesions from predominantly solid lesions.
When clinically indicated, Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess blood flow within or around a lesion.
The scan may help evaluate facial swelling, palpable lumps, cysts, fluid collections, inflammatory changes, lipomas, post-traumatic abnormalities, and other superficial soft-tissue lesions.
Images are obtained in appropriate planes to assess the lesion and its relationship with nearby structures.
The examination is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation.
The completed images are reviewed by a qualified radiology professional and interpreted in correlation with the patient’s symptoms, examination findings, and previous investigations.
Appropriate ultrasound safety and patient-care protocols are followed throughout the examination.
