Book your USG AXILLA Scan at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy that offers advanced services in radiology and diagnostic imaging; an NABL- and NABH-certified diagnostic centre. An ultrasound examination of the axilla gives detailed, real-time imaging of the superficial blood vessels, lymph nodes, and other soft tissue structures of the armpit area.
About USG Axilla
A non-invasive ultrasound examination of the axillary area is called USG Axilla. It is done frequently in the presence of swelling, pain, tenderness, or abnormality of the axillary region. The imaging involves high-frequency sound waves that generate detailed images without the use of ionizing radiation. It is useful to assess lymph node size and shape, appearance within the lymph node, and other lymph soft tissue abnormalities.
What is USG Axilla?
An ultrasound transducer is gently pressed against the skin of the armpit after applying ultrasound gel. It is a scan that shows real-time images of the structures in the axilla, such as the lymph nodes, superficial soft tissues, or blood vessels. When necessary, Doppler assessment can be used to assess blood flow in the lesion and/or surrounding structures.
Common Reasons for USG Axilla
Lump or swelling in the armpit
Pain or tenderness in the axillary region
Evaluation of enlarged lymph nodes
Follow-up of previously detected lymph node abnormalities
Suspected infection or inflammation
Evaluation of superficial soft-tissue lesions
Assessment of a known mass
Evaluation following injury or surgery
Monitoring of lymph nodes during treatment or follow-up
Further assessment of an abnormality detected during clinical examination
Conditions Evaluated
Enlarged Lymph Nodes
Ultrasound can provide detailed information about axillary lymph nodes, including their size, shape, internal appearance, and distribution.
Lymph Node Abnormalities
The examination can help characterize lymph nodes that appear enlarged or otherwise unusual and may assist the doctor in deciding whether further evaluation is required.
Inflammatory Changes
USG can identify changes associated with inflammation or infection in the axillary soft tissues and lymph nodes.
Abscesses and Fluid Collections
Ultrasound can help detect fluid-filled collections or abscesses within the superficial tissues of the axilla.
Soft-Tissue Masses
The scan can evaluate palpable lumps and superficial masses, helping determine their location, size, and general characteristics.
Vascular Abnormalities
Doppler ultrasound may be used when necessary to assess blood flow within the axillary vessels or a particular lesion.
Post-Surgical or Post-Treatment Changes
USG Axilla may be used for follow-up of previously treated conditions and to assess postoperative or post-treatment soft-tissue changes.
Benefits of USG Axilla
Non-invasive and generally well tolerated
No ionizing radiation
Provides real-time imaging of the axillary region
Useful for evaluating enlarged lymph nodes
Helps assess superficial lumps and swellings
Can distinguish many cystic and solid abnormalities
Doppler assessment can evaluate blood flow when required
Useful for follow-up examinations

Book Your USG Axilla
If a doctor has recommended an ultrasound of the axilla, schedule your examination at Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy. Bring the patient's prescription, previous ultrasound reports, mammography or other imaging reports, and relevant medical records when available. Inform the ultrasound team about the location of any lump, swelling, pain, or other area of concern before the examination.
Test information: Fasting is not required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
Fasting is not required for a routine ultrasound examination of the axilla.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to both or the affected axillary region.
Inform the ultrasound team about the exact location of any lump, swelling, pain, tenderness, or other area of concern.
Inform the healthcare professional about any previous surgery, injury, infection, inflammation, or treatment involving the armpit or nearby breast region.
Bring your doctor’s prescription and previous ultrasound, mammography, CT, MRI, or other relevant imaging reports if available.
Inform the medical team about any known lymph node abnormality or previous biopsy or treatment of an axillary lesion.
Keep the skin over the area being examined clean and avoid applying heavy creams or other products when possible.
Follow any additional instructions provided by your doctor or the ultrasound team.
Remain relaxed and keep the arm in the position advised by the sonographer during the examination.
The patient’s symptoms, medical history, previous procedures, and clinical indication are reviewed before the examination.
The patient is positioned comfortably with the arm placed appropriately to provide access to the axillary region.
Ultrasound gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined.
A handheld ultrasound transducer is gently moved over the axilla to obtain real-time images.
High-frequency sound waves are used to evaluate the lymph nodes, superficial soft tissues, and relevant blood vessels of the axillary region.
The examination can assess lymph node size, shape, distribution, internal appearance, and relationship with surrounding tissues.
Ultrasound may help evaluate enlarged or abnormal lymph nodes, cysts, fluid collections, abscesses, inflammatory changes, and other superficial soft-tissue abnormalities.
When clinically indicated, Doppler ultrasound may be performed to assess blood flow within the axillary vessels or a particular lesion.
Both axillae may be examined when clinically requested or when comparison is considered useful.
The scan may also be used for follow-up of known lymph node abnormalities or post-surgical and post-treatment changes.
The examination is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation.
The obtained images are reviewed by a qualified radiology professional and interpreted in correlation with the patient’s symptoms, clinical examination, and previous investigations.
Appropriate ultrasound safety and patient-care protocols are followed throughout the examination.
