In Molecular Diagnostics and Therapy USG guided FNAC Procedure is available at our NABL, NABH Accredited Diagnostic Centre as Advanced diagnostic & Ultrasound guided services. A fine needle is inserted through the skin and into a specific lump, nodule, or abnormal area, and then cells are removed from the area for cytological examination, a minimally invasive procedure that is guided by real-time ultrasound imaging.
About USG Guided FNAC Procedure
USG Guided FNAC: it is a diagnostic technique for obtaining cells from a gross lump/lesion/abnormal tissue by using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance. The ultrasound imaging enables the radiologist to visualize the area that is to be targeted in real time and to position the needle accurately. It is usually done to evaluate any thyroid nodules, size of the breast lumps, enlarged lymph nodes, enlargement of the salivary glands, or other immediately felt soft-tissue diseases.
What Is USG Guided FNAC?
USG-guided FNAC is a technique consisting of ultrasound imaging and fine-needle aspiration (FNA) whereby a portion of the body is drawn, yielding samples of cells. During the procedure, the patient positions him/herself so that access is appropriate to the area of interest. The radiologist uses an ultrasound 'probe' to find the location of the lesion and guides a very fine needle into it. Gentle aspiration is performed to take the cells for laboratory analysis. The technique is generally based on the indications and clinical demands and will be performed under local anaesthesia.
Common Reasons for USG-Guided FNAC
Thyroid nodules: During the checkup or ultrasound examination, they look for thyroid nodules and lumps to check those selected.
Breast lumps: Take cells from some types of abnormalities in the breast to look at them under the microscope.
Evaluation of enlarged lymph nodes: To investigate enlarged lymph nodes or when there might be a problem with a lymph node enlargement that is not obvious.
Salivary gland lesions: To explore any particular abnormalities of the parotid, submandibular or other salivary gland(s).
Superficial or deep soft-tissue lesions which can be accessed: To acquire samples of the cells in the superficial or deep thickness of the soft tissue lesions.
Uncontrolled growths: Masses discovered during a physical examination and pictures that do not fit in with an obvious explanation.
Previous abnormalities: To get other diagnostic information if suggested by cytological evaluation.
Conditions Evaluated
Thyroid Nodules and Lesions
USG-FNA is helpful in taking a sample of cells from the thyroid nodules to assess the thyroid examination and in differentiating benign vs. suspicious thyroid examination.
Breast Abnormalities
It can be used to sample the cells from a tumour or lump within the breast identified by ultrasound or other imaging techniques.
Lymph Node Abnormalities
Enlarged or suspicious lymph nodes can be investigated using cell materials taken from the node at FNAC examinations, which have the potential to show if there are reactive, inflammatory, or infective changes or suspicious changes indicative of malignancy.
Salivary Gland Lesions
The doctor can take advantage of ultrasound guidance to select a particular salivary gland lesion for cellular sampling and cytological evaluation.
Soft-Tissue Masses
The technique can be used to examine soft-tissue masses that can be reached and to get cells for examining them in the lab.
Inflammatory and Infective Conditions
Gently collected, aspirated samples can be analysed if clinically appropriate, to aid in the investigation of some inflammatory and infective conditions.

Test information: Usually, no fasting is required.
Reporting: Within 24 hours*
No fasting is required before the procedure.
Inform the radiologist about all medicines you are taking, particularly blood thinners or medicines that may affect blood clotting. Do not stop any medication without medical advice.
Inform the doctor about any known allergies, bleeding disorders, or previous reactions to local anaesthesia.
Carry your prescription, previous ultrasound reports, relevant imaging scans, and medical records related to the lump or lesion.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.
Follow any additional instructions provided by the radiologist based on the location and nature of the lesion.
The patient is positioned comfortably to allow clear access to the area being examined.
The radiologist uses an ultrasound probe to locate the lump, nodule, or lesion and identify the appropriate needle insertion site.
The skin over the sampling area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Sterile precautions are followed throughout the procedure.
Local anaesthesia may be administered if required.
A fine needle attached to a syringe is gently guided into the target area under real-time ultrasound imaging.
Gentle aspiration is performed to collect cellular material from the lesion for cytological examination.
The collected sample is transferred onto slides or into a suitable specimen container for laboratory analysis.
The needle is withdrawn, and a small dressing is applied to the sampling site. The patient may be observed briefly before leaving.
